Study raises concerns about health app data sharing |
|
|
A study led by Canadian researchers and published in the British Medical Journal has found that many health apps are sharing information with outside companies, without this always being obvious to users, digitalhealth.net has reported. A team led by the University of Toronto tested the 24 top-rated health apps for Android in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, and found that 19 shared data with outside companies, including parent organisations, service providers and third or fourth parties, such as insurers and credit ratings agencies. The researchers urged developers, medics and regulators to consider whether the potential loss of privacy was a “fair cost” for the service provided. |
