Hancock claims NHS for the Conservatives
Health and social care secretary Matt Hancock, tipped as an outsider in the Conservative Party leadership contest that looks set to be triggered by the latest turmoil over Brexit, has given an interview to the Conservative Home website. In it, he claims the Conservatives were the “original party of the NHS”; based on the publication of a paper proposing a universal health service by Tory Henry Willink before Labour was elected in 1945. He also says that to meet rising demand on the service, technology should be used to deliver services closer to home and to make sure people “take responsibility” for their health and wellbeing”.

Public health news: Life expectancy gap widens; BMA calls for reversal of ‘damaging’ public health cuts
Figures from the Office for National Statistics confirm that the gap between the life expectancy of men and women in the richest and poorest areas of England is growing. A report in the Guardian says the gap has increased by 0.3 years for men (to 83.3 and 74 years) and 0.5 years for women (86.2 and 78.7 years). Meanwhile, the British Medical Association has issued a report calling for an end to the “squeeze” on public health spending and for an upcoming green paper to recognise the importance of societal factors on ill health and the role of government action in addressing them.

Digital Health Rewired: keynote speeches reported
The first Digital Health Rewired conference and exhibition took place at London Olympia. The Health Service Journal (£) reported that government advisor Ben Goldacre used his keynote speech to call for the open publication and analysis of NHS data. ComputerWeekly.com reported that government advisor Hadley Beeman told the event that NHSX would promote compliance with open standards and create a regulatory sandbox to support innovation. Digitalhealth.net reported that despite NHSX’s arrival, the future of NHS Digital was “solid”. The website also reported that TestCard, which enables individuals to conduct urine tests at home, won the event’s innovator Pitchfest.

Open was a big theme at Digital Health Rewired, and our write-up of the event focuses on what has changed since open data, open source, and open standards were last in vogue in the NHS. Read it on our website or at the foot of the newsletter.

Study raises concerns about health app data sharing
A study led by Canadian researchers and published in the British Medical Journal has found that many health apps are sharing information with outside companies, without this always being obvious to users, digitalhealth.net has reported. A team led by the University of Toronto tested the 24 top-rated health apps for Android in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, and found that 19 shared data with outside companies, including parent organisations, service providers and third or fourth parties, such as insurers and credit ratings agencies. The researchers urged developers, medics and regulators to consider whether the potential loss of privacy was a “fair cost” for the service provided.

Health IT news: CSU launches Care Navigation Service; TPP achieves GP Connect milestone; IMS MAXIMS forms partnership with SES
IMS MAXIMS has formed a partnership with Secure Exchange Solutions, digitalhealth.net has reported. Chief executive Shane Tickell told the website the move would help the NHS to shift away from “insecure messaging, antiquating faxing, and expensive, limited function paging”. NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit has launched a Care Navigation Service to bring together a number of patient-facing services, including transport and PALS, the Health Tech Newspaper has reported. TPP has achieved full roll-out approval for Access Record: HTML Capability, as part of NHS Digital’s GP Connect Programme, which is working to make GP records available in any care setting, the HTN has also reported.
