Covid-19 latest: back to plan A as vaccine debate continues
England has returned to ‘plan A’ following the government’s decision to lift the ‘plan B’ measures that it imposed to control the spread of the omicron variant of Covid-19. As of Thursday, 27 January, people are no longer advised to work from home and don’t have to wear face coverings indoors or use the NHS Covid Pass in venues. Travel controls will be abolished next month. Debate continues over the requirement for NHS staff to be fully vaccinated to retain patient-facing jobs. The Royal College of GPs said this week that compulsion was not the right way forward and the NHS could not afford to lose workers (BBC News).
Net zero
Green awards include IT to support low-carbon care
NHS England has announced that SBRI Healthcare has awarded £1 million to ten med tech and digital innovations to support the delivery of a net zero NHS. The awards follow a Greener NHS Programme competition and cover: projects to reduce the carbon impact of anaesthetic gases, PPE and textiles; digital tools to help staff make low-carbon choices, treatment and prescribing decisions; telemedicine to reduce hospital referrals; and drone delivery. SBRI is a small business research initiatives scheme, launched more than a decade ago by NHS East and NHS Midlands to find solutions for defined healthcare problems.
