General election campaign continues to feature NHS
As the general election campaign moved into its final week, Conservative leader Theresa May told the BBC she was best placed to “make a success of Brexit” and “provide the NHS with the resources it needs.” Former Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg hit back saying May had “chosen a UKIP style version of Brexit that is already causing a squeeze on public services.” And Labour’s Jon Ashworth told the Hull Daily Mail the NHS “could not afford” another five years of Tory government. Meanwhile, the Scottish Herald reported that Scottish voters “think the NHS is safest with the SNP.”

Patient experience holds up despite NHS pressures
The Care Quality Commission’s annual survey has found that patient experience of the NHS is holding up, despite the much-publicised financial and structural pressures that the service is under. As reported by the Health Service Journal, however, the survey also found that patients are becoming worried by specific issues, including waits, food, and being cared for on a ward and after leaving hospital. The number of people saying they waited too long went up 2%; with 17% of those surveyed saying they should have been admitted “a bit” sooner and 10% “a lot” sooner.

Expats ‘could cost the NHS half-a-billion-pounds post Brexit’
The Nuffield Trust has warned that the NHS could face a bill of almost half a billion pounds if retired British people living in other EU countries return to the UK after Brexit. It bases its prediction on the age and likely disease profile of the 190,000 British pensioners living in other EU countries. It claims the cost of treating them would be around £979 million – or twice what the UK government currently reimburses other states for their care – and that 900 beds – or the equivalent of two London hospitals – would be needed to accommodate them.

Beware another NHS re-organisation
The Health Service Journal has warned that the NHS could be in danger of stumbling into another top-down reorganisation. In an opinion piece sparked by the Conservative Party’s manifesto pledge to bring in legislation if it ‘helped’ reform and a move towards accountable care organisations, Dave West outlines a series of pitfalls including; a lack of agreement on what new structures are needed, probable rows on how they would be implemented locally, a lack of clarity on who would be responsible for financial and other benefits, and the sheer cost of further change.

Beverley Bryant is leaving NHS Digital for System C/Graphnet. As reported by the Health Service Journal and digitalhealth.net, she will become chief operating officer from August. Bryant’s departure follows that of NHS Digital chief executive Andy Williams in March and his replacement by Sarah Wilkinson in April. Marcus Bolton, one of the founders and senior executives of System C/Graphnet described Bryant as “the leading light of healthcare informatics” and said she would “make a huge contribution”, while Bryant said she was “really pleased and excited to be joining the supplier community at such a critical moment.”

Bryant urges successor to stick to IT strategy
In a brief, exclusive interview with the Health Service Journal, Beverley Bryant urged NHS leaders to stick with the IT agenda set out in Personalised Health and Care 2020. Bryant, who is leaving NHS Digital for a new role at System C/Graphnet, said the strategy had “widespread support” and it was vital that new people “do not try to come in and start to re-invent what has been agreed.” She also praised health secretary Jeremy Hunt and former boss Tim Kelsey for their vision and her “fantastic teams” at NHS England and NHS Digital for their support.

Digitalhealth.net has covered the launch earlier this year of an NHS Digital GP Data Hub to give patients access to information about GP practices. When it comes to the NHS, Google doesn’t have all the answers
Big consumer brands can easily dominate national headlines – even when it comes to healthcare. So how can smaller companies get a share of the limelight? Matthew D'Arcy asks.
